PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The sixth-ranked women's soccer team from Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach campus closed out its two-game road trip with a 3-1 win over the ERAU team from Prescott, Ariz. on Sunday evening. ERAU Daytona Beach outshot the team from its sister campus 22-11 and improved its overall record to 3-0 on the year.
The first six minutes featured scoring chances by both sides, including an ERAU Prescott scrum that saw the ball cleared off the line and ended with an
Olivia Lynch save.
ERAU Daytona Beach turned the near miss into a goal on the counter attack. After collecting the ball on the right side,
Isabelle Haaranen lifted a ball across the box to the far post where Julia Karlernäs was on hand to head home the first goal of her collegiate career and give the Florida team a 1-0 lead at the 6:45 mark.
The Eagles' second goal came less than four minutes later.
Emmie Johansson got a short pass off to Andrea Frøshaug and the junior chipped the ball over the head of ERAU Arizona goalkeeper Brenda Quinn with a volley from about 40 yards out to increase the ERAU Florida lead to 2-0.
The home team got a goal back in the 16th minute when Amie Jepsen's corner kick bounced off an ERAU defender on the far post and into the net.
With 7:23 left in the first half ERAU Arizona's Estelle Fortes got off a dangerous shot, but
Olivia Lynch came up with a impressive save to keep the Prescott team from adding to its tally and the Florida squad took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break.
Less than six minutes into the second half, the Prescott Eagles committed a foul inside the 18-yard box.
Katherine Ebbs stepped up to the penalty spot and for the second time in as many games, the senior converted from the penalty spot to seal the 3-1 win for ERAU Daytona Beach.
Lynch had a strong performance for ERAU Daytona, finishing with eight saves in her 90 minutes between the pipes. Her counterpart, Quinn also collected eight saves as ERAU Prescott moved to 1-2 with the loss.
"First, I'd like to give credit to Todd and his team," ERAU Daytona Beach Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "They've come a long way since the last time we played and gave a good effort tonight. We knew they could be disruptive as we saw them match Concordia (Calif.) for much of the first half on Thursday. If I'm being forthcoming, I was really disappointed in our performance in the last 20 minutes of the first half. We looked lackluster and didn't have much energy. That allowed them to score the own goal and climb back in a bit. We didn't play our system and became really undisciplined. In the second half, we did a better job of possessing and creating chances, but still fell short on finishing our opportunities. We have do to a better job overall if we want to accomplish the goals we've set for this season.
"We'll take away some valuable lessons on the field from this weekend, and had a fantastic time visiting here in Arizona."
ERAU Florida returns to Daytona Beach to host three other teams in the fourth annual Habitat for Humanity Invitational, Sept. 5-7. ERAU will take on Auburn Montgomery at 6 p.m. on Friday.
