Box ScoreDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team overcame a late start and soggy conditions to open the 2014 Habitat for Humanity Invitational with a 4-0 win over Auburn Montgomery, Friday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Eagles (4-0) took the field two hours later than their originally scheduled time of 6 p.m. as inclement weather, which postponed the first game of the day after just 22 seconds of play, forced both sides to play the waiting game.
"I thought this was a good game for us" ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said following the game. "I'm glad we got it in with the weather and the field held up really well, so we could actually play pretty true to the way we would normally. I was really excited to be able to reward some players with some playing time tonight. Our group as a whole has been training so hard and after opening up with the No. 4 and No. 5 teams in the country, it was nice to be able to get some minutes for some other players. I think some did really well and showed that they might be deserving of some more minutes."
Freshman
Annie Gelnaw led the way for the Blue and Gold in her first start of the season as she contributed to three of the Eagles' four goals with a goal and two assists. As a team, ERAU, who dominated the game from the first whistle, outshot the Warhawks 21-3 and took eight corner kicks to just two by AUM.
The Eagles won the coin toss for the kick-off and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Gelnaw collected the ball on the right side and dribbled toward the box and sent a ball across the goal to an unmarked
Katherine Ebbs who volleyed home her third goal of season, just 43 seconds into the contest.
Gelnaw was also involved in the Eagles' second goal. Once again, her pace allowed her to get in behind the Warhawks' defender on the right side and she delivered another low cross across the face of goal.
Emmie Johansson made a run to the far post and was on hand to tap in her first goal of the year for a 2-0 Eagle advantage.
Gelnaw further put her stamp on the game in the 39th minute when she dispossessed an AUM defender and dribbled about 10 yards before rifling a shot in the lower corner to make the score 3-0 for the Blue and Gold at the half.
Gelnaw was subbed in favor of Andrea Froshaug late in the first half and Froshaug added to her team-high season tally with her fourth goal of the year in the 73rd minute.
Kristin Sverrisdottir released Froshaug with pass from the middle of the park and Froshaug used her pace to outrun the AUM defense and slot home the final goal of the night.
"I love the way Lorna [Brownlie] is trying to get AUM to play," Bohon observed "They're a very, very technical team and they play really attractive, sound soccer.
I want to recognize our team defense, especially our back four and our goalkeeper, because it was quite a feat to hold AUM without a shot on goal for the first 87 minutes of the game."
The Eagles will participate in a Habitat for Humanity workday on Saturday before closing out play in the Habitat for Humanity Invitational at 6 p.m. on Sunday when they take on Oklahoma Baptist.
"I'm really excited for the Habitat tournament," Bohon commented "I'm looking forward to working with AUM tomorrow and to giving our team a great opportunity for some quality community service before we return to the pitch on Sunday."
