WINTER PARK, Fla. – A three-set win by
Giovanna Tomiotto capped an epic, five-hour, 20-minute women's tennis match that saw second-ranked Embry-Riddle edge NCAA II No. 9 Rollins 5-4, Tuesday at Bert W. Martin Tennis Complex. Tuesday's match marked the second straight year that the Eagles were able to pull off the one-point win over the Tars (0-1) and improved the Eagles' 2015 record to 3-0.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. The first doubles match to reach completion was on court three where
Ana Gonzalez-Hoy and Tomiotto took down Katie Wookey and Fabiana Vitanza to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Down 3-2 early in the match, the Eagles'
Hui-I Huang and Anna Götz overtook the Rollins team of Shannon Etten and Johanna Collins on the way to an 8-5 win at the top spot.
The Eagles' biggest doubles comeback of the day was at the second flight. The ERAU tandem of
Paula Ortiz Couder and
Kathryn Bock fell behind 5-2 to Taylor Brown and Carli Davis to open that match-up. Ortiz Couder and Bock won five of the next six games to move ahead before pulling out a 9-7 victory to complete the doubles sweep and give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage heading into singles.
Singles play saw the Tars quickly erase the deficit as Etten topped Huang 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1, Olssen bested Ortiz Couder 6-3, 6-4 on court three and Vitanza held off Gonzalez-Hoy 7-5, 6-4 at the fifth spot.
The Eagles briefly reclaimed the lead when Götz pulled out a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Davis on the second court, but Emma Wookey drew the Tars level once again with her 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 decision against Bock at the sixth spot.
With the team result still to be decided, all eyes turned to the match at No. 4 singles where Tomiotto had dropped the first set to Brown, 7-6 (10-8). The ERAU junior rebounded to take the second 6-4 and took over the match in the third, dispatching Brown 6-0 to clinch the win for the Eagles.
"Giovanna's win was a tribute to her fitness level," ERAU Head Coach Dave Paschal said. "She played the best match of her career today."
The Eagles return to the Crotty Tennis Complex on Friday for perhaps their toughest challenge of the season as they host top-ranked and defending NCAA II national champion Barry. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
