DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched a 9-0 shutout against Webber International on Wednesday to remain unbeaten in the Sun Conference in 2015. The Eagles are now 12-3 and are 5-0 in conference play.
The Eagles gained an early advantage in Wednesday's match as a lack of personnel forced the Warriors to forfeit the matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Up 2-0 the Eagles went on to sweep the remaining two doubles matches as
Miguel Lopez Gomez and
Rodolfo Arreygue blanked Patricio Henning and Victor Zapparoli 8-0 at the second position, and Fabian Zierlyn and reigning NAIA National Player of the Week
Carlos Becke bested Rodrigo Santibanez and Hugo Cedeno 8-2 at the top spot.
Singles play saw
Luke de Caires grab the clinching point with his 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Henning on court three. Arreygue followed with a straight-set shutout of his own against Mario Perez at the fifth spot, and Becke wrapped his 12th singles win of the year by downing Cedeno 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
Playing at the top spot in the singles lineup, Zierlyn notched an easy first-set win, 6-1, over Santibanez, but the WIU junior bounced back to take the second 6-2 and force a third set to break the tie. Zierlyn scored four unanswered points to open the 10-point tiebreaker and went on to win the match 10-7.
The final match to reach completion was at No. 4 singles where Lopez Gomez topped Zapparoli 6-1, 6-2 to seal the shutout.
The Eagles' next match will be against NCAA II Florida Tech at 3:30 p.m. on April 2 at ERAU's Crotty Tennis Complex.
