MOBILE, Ala. –- The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team rode a 3-0 doubles sweep to a 5-0 defeat of Arizona Christian in the second round of the 2015 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship, Wednesday at the Mobile Tennis Center. The Eagles improved to 14-5 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals for the sixth year in a row. The 11th-seeded Firestorm ended their season at 23-3 overall.
On the third doubles court, the ERAU pair of
Meena Bennett and
Giovanna Tomiotto fell behind early, 2-0, but the Eagle tandem bounced back to rattle off of eight straight games and give the Blue and Gold 1-0 lead with an 8-2 defeat of Rafaela Zak Zak and Iulia Marceno.
Kathryn Bock and
Paula Ortiz Couder took a commanding 5-1 lead on court two, which helped them to an 8-4 win over Jessica Trink and Desiree Jackson. Third-ranked
Hui-I Huang and Anna Götz's 8-3 defeat of 17th-ranked Andrea Crook and Mikayla Morgan at the top spot completed the doubles sweep for the Eagles and propelled them to a 3-0 lead heading into singles.
Ranked No. 17 in the ITA/NAIA singles poll, Huang registered the first singles point for ERAU, easily dispatching 31st-ranked Jackson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 on court one. The Eagles won the first set in four of the five remaining matches on the court, but it was Tomiotto who came away with the clincher, downing Zak Zak 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth spot.
The Eagles' quarterfinal foe will be third-seeded Lindsey Wilson. That match is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday.
