DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team fell by a score of 2-0 to the visiting Nova Southeastern Sharks on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 4-3 on the year, while NSU improves to 6-2.
"It didn't help that we missed a pk and two breakaways, but I'm a firm believer that you have to earn your luck on a night like tonight," ERAU Head Coach Samantha Bohon said. "We need to get back to the blue-collar mentality and fast!"
"I also want to congratulate John [Constable] and the Nova squad,"Â Bohon continued. "They came in from the very beginning and worked hard, and they just outworked us. I think they deserved the result tonight. I think our team would agree that we did not bring the appropriate investment in the first half tonight, and that's disappointing. Hopefully we can try and sort some things out in the next couple days as we get ready for a tough opponent in Eckerd."
The Sharks outshout ERAU 13-9 on the night and put eight shots on frame against the Eagles' four.
Katherine Ebbs led the team with four shots and Olivia Lynch was active in net, making six saves in the losing effort.
The Eagles had the first good scoring chance of the game in the seventh minute when a Gudrun Johnson corner kick eventually found its way to the feet of Andrea Frøshaug near the top of the box, who ripped a shot that sailed just inches over the crossbar.
Nova Southeastern earned its first corner kick of the night in the 20th minute and the Sharks capitalized on the opportunity. Sarah Keville's corner was settled down by Elizabeth Haumschild who fired a shot off of the crossbar. The rebound went to Sierra Lelii who tapped a pass to Emily Stearns who put home the game's first goal.
The Eagles looked to be the better side early in the second half as Frøshaug had a scoring chance just a couple minutes into the period that was saved by Amanda Kopale, and just about a minute later Frøshaug took another shot that went just wide of the frame.
In the 53rd minute, the Blue and Gold would have its best scoring opportunity of the night when an NSU defender was called for a handball in the box while defending an ERAU corner kick, giving the Eagles a penalty kick. Katherine Ebbs stepped up to take the kick, but her shot caromed off the inside of the right post and was quickly cleared by the Shark defense.
Five minutes later the Eagles nearly tied the match on a long-range shot from Emmie Johansson that looked to be labeled for the top-right corner of the net, but Kopale came up with a leaping punch to preserve her shutout.
Nova Southeastern tacked on its second goal in the 90th minute when Stearns launched a shot from near the midfield stripe with Lynch out of position after coming up to be an offensive threat on a corner kick just a few seconds earlier. Stearns' shot had just enough pace to trickle over the goal line before Lynch could get back to her goal, giving the Sharks an insurance goal and a 2-0 victory.
The Blue and Gold will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 26 for a road contest at Eckerd. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
