PENSACOLA, Fla. – A long day of tennis ended with a quarterfinal berth for the Embry-Riddle men's tennis tandem of
Carlos Becke and
Fabian Zierleyn, Friday at the 2015 USTA/ITA South Region Championships hosted by the University of West Florida.
The duo took the court at 9 a.m. CDT and battled Mississippi College's Joan Valy and Marcos Rocca to a 9-8 win, including a 7-3 decision in the tiebreaker. An hour later, Becke and Zierleyn were back in action again and emerged from that contest with an 8-5 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic's Asteway Adams and Nicholas Battistini to move on to the round of eight.
Newcomer Mikael Faucher was the only Eagle to record a win in singles play in the afternoon's slate of matches. The freshman topped West Alabama's Casper Schuetze 7-5, 6-4 in the first round, but fell to Valdosta State's Leo Blay 7-6, 6-1 in the second.
Zierleyn dropped his first-round match to Gereon Heitmann of Valdosta State, 6-2, 6-2, while an injury forced Becke to withdraw from his singles match.
Becke and Zierleyn are scheduled to take the court for their quarterfinal match at 4:30 p.m. CDT on Saturday against second-seeded Alex Peyrot and Kenny Brasil from host West Florida. Prior to that contest, Zierelyn will take on Lee's Boyd Blackburn in the consolation bracket.
