DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 10
th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team finally wrapped up its match against Flagler (1-1) on Friday afternoon, topping the 33
rd-ranked Saints 6-3 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The match that began on Tuesday in St. Augustine and was suspended due to rain, saw the Eagles win five of the six singles matches played on Friday to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Playing at Flagler's home courts on Tuesday, the Eagles fell behind the Saints 2-1 after doubles.
Luke de Caires and
Rodolfo Arreygue scored the Eagles' first point with an 8-3 defeat of Hermann Gertmann and Konstantin Dustmann at No. 3 doubles. But the Saints got the next two points when Willy Hasselberg and Luca Boll topped
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Mickael Faucher 8-4 on court two, and Lukas Storck and Felipe Carvalho held off
Carlos Becke and
Deepak Vishavkarma 8-6 at the top doubles spot.
Newcomer
Andres Donayre was the first to finish his singles match on Friday as he downed Dustmann 6-3, 6-1 at the fifth spot. However, Bolla got the better of a 6-1, 6-3 match-up against Vishavkarma at the third spot to reclaim a one-point advantage for Flagler.
Arreygue earned a quick 6-1 victory in his first set in St. Augustine against Caravalho, but the second set in Daytona Beach was more closely contested. In the end, Arreygue was able to pull out a 7-6 (3) win to tie the team score at 3-3. Next off the court was the Eagles' No. 6 player de Caires who earned hard-fought 7-6 (3) victory over Daniel Arrien in the first set and rolled to a 6-2 win in the second to give the Eagles their first lead of the contest.
At No. 2 singles, Becke fell behind by two breaks, but rallied to win the first set and cruised to a 6-1 defeat of Gertmann in the second to score the clinching point for the Blue and Gold.
The final match off the court also required a tiebreaker to decide the first set. Both players battled hard in the first frame and in the end it was Storck who managed to edge Ortiz Couder 11-9 to take the set. Ortiz Couder bounced back to win the second set 7-5 and capped the Eagle win by taking the third set 11-9.
The Eagles are back in action at 10 a.m. on Sunday when they travel to Miami Shores to take on seventh-ranked Barry.
