VALDOSTA, Ga. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team registered its first upset of the season on Friday. Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Eagles won four singles matches to topple fifth-ranked Valdosta State 5-4 on the Blazers' home courts.
Carlos Becke and
Deepak Vishavkarma recorded the Eagles' first point of the day with an 8-4 win over Eden Peleg and Axel Holm at the top doubles spot. However, the Blazers moved in front 2-1 after 19
th-ranked Leo Blay and Xavier Pineda topped
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Mickael Faucher 8-5, and Fernando Rivas and Jordi Mas bested
Rodolfo Arreygue and
Luke de Caires by the same score.
Luke de Caires got the scoring started for the Eagles in singles, dispatching Davis Stewart 6-0, 6-2 on court six. Next to him on court five, ERAU's
Andres Donayre put the Eagles back in front with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Peleg.
The Blazers claimed two points as Pineda bested Vishavkarma 6-3, 7-5 and Mas topped Arreygue 6-3, 7-5 at the third and fourth spots, respectively. But Becke tied things up again with his 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Rivas at the second position.
For the fifth time in as many matches, Ortiz Couder played in a three-setter. This time, his opponent at the top spot was third-ranked Blay. Blay took the first set 6-4, but Ortiz Couder was able to give as good as he got, topping Blay by the same score in the second frame to force a third set. The deciding frame was all Ortiz Couder as the sophomore topped Blay 6-3 to lift the Eagles to the win.
The Eagles face their third straight top-10 foe on Saturday in a neutral site match against No. 9 West Florida at 10 a.m.
