WINTER PARK, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team was successful in its return to play after a two-week layoff, as the Eagles earned a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over No. 28 Rollins on the road on Wednesday. ERAU improved to 5-3, while the Tars evened their record at 7-7.
The day's play began with an Tar win at the third doubles spot as Francesco Racanelli and Ziad Melhaoui topped
Rodolfo Arreygue and
Luke de Caires 8-4. At the top doubles spot, the newly minted seventh-ranked tandem of
Carlos Becke and
Deepak Vishavkarma bested Ahmed Albitar and Daniel Ferl 8-5, but Patrick Sell and Sami Kirberg edged
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Mickael Faucher 9-8 (11-9) to take a 2-1 edge heading into singles.
Rollins further extended its lead to 3-1 via Albitar's 6-2, 6-3 win over Vishavkarma at No. 3 singles.
Andres Donayre narrowed the gap to one with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Cody Gubin on court six, but the Tars moved closer to the clinching point when Kirberg came out on the winning end of a 7-6 (2), 6-3 battle against de Caires at No. 5.
The next match off the court was at the second spot, where Becke battled Racanelli to a 7-6 (5) win in the first set, before rolling to a 6-1 win in the second to make the team score 4-3 in favor of Rollins.
After dropping the first set 6-4 on court four, Arreygue bounced back in a big way against Melhaoui, dispatching the Rollins sophomore 6-0, 6-0 to pull ERAU level with the Tars.
Five of Ortiz Couder's six previous singles matches went to three sets and Wednesday's matchup against Sell at the top spot was no different. The 18
th-ranked sophomore rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the first set to best Sell 6-4, 6-2 in the final two frames and clinch the win for the Eagles.
The Eagles are back on the road on Saturday. The will take on No. 3 Saint Leo at noon.
