DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched its first shutout of 2017 with a 9-0 defeat of Lewis (Illinois), Tuesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Ranked 10
th in the most recent ITA/NCAA II poll, the Eagles improved to 4-3 on the year, while the Flyers fall to 7-5.
The first match off the court was at the second doubles spot where
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Mickael Faucher easily dispatched Chandler Stimpert and Mate Srdanovic 8-1.
Luke de Caires and
Rodolfo Arreygue topped Anton Levitin and Benjamin Kasbeer by the same score a the third spot, and
Carlos Becke and
Deepak Vishavkarma fended off a late rally by Andre Norasith and Brendan Peterson to win 8-6 and complete the Eagles' doubles sweep.
After winning the first set 6-3, Vishavkarma stumbled in the second, falling behind Peterson 5-2. The junior bounced back, however, and won five straight games to take the match 7-5.
Next door on court two, Becke cruised in the first, 6-0, and battled Norasith to 7-6 (4) tiebreak win in the second to score the clinching point for the Blue and Gold.
The matches at the fourth and fifth spots saw both Eagle players lose their respective first sets, but both were able to rebound as Ortiz Couder bested Srdanovic 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 1 and Arreygue topped Stimpert 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-6.
Andres Donayre blanked Kasbeer 6-0, 6-0 on court six and de Caires capped the scoring with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Levitin at the fifth spot.
The Eagles will enjoy an extended break before returning to action in Winter Park against Rollins on March 22.
