DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Senior
Luke de Caires led the 10
th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team to a 7-2 win over No. 38 Florida Southern, Tuesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Andres Donayre were efficient in their win at No. 2 doubles, dispatching Oscar Soderlund and Fabian Lunberg 8-1 in just 29 minutes. Seventh-ranked
Carlos Becke and
Deepak Vishavkarma followed with an 8-2 defeat of Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Jose de Sairo at the top spot, and de Caires, playing the final match of his Embry-Riddle career, teamed up with
Rodolfo Arreygue to complete the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Blaine Miller and Derek Bell at the third position.
The Eagles easily won their first three singles matches, but the remaining contests were all tight battles with two of the three going to three sets. De Caires capped his collegiate career with a bang, as he made quick work of Soderlund on court four, winning 6-1, 6-0 to put the Eagles up 4-0.
Ortiz Couder, who is ranked 18
th in the NCAA II singles poll, was just minutes behind, clinching the Eagle victory with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Lunberg at No. 1 singles, and Donayre followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Lennart Vossgatter at the fifth spot.
At No. 3 singles, Arreygue won the first set 6-2, but dropped the second 6-3 and fell to Alvarez-Hevia 11-9 in the tiebreaker to give the Mocs their first point of the day. The match at the sixth spot saw
Mickael Faucher fall behind Blaine Miller 6-4 in the first set, but the ERAU sophomore bounced back to win the second set 7-5 and claimed the match with a 10-7 win in the third.
The last match to finish was at the second position where de Sario held off Becke 7-5, 6-4.
Tuesday's match was the last contest of the 2016-17 campaign for the Blue and Gold who capped their final season of provisional NCAA II membership with a 9-4 overall record.
