DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles to defeat No. 48 Florida Tech 6-3, Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Sunday's victory extended the Eagles' overall record to 8-4, while Florida Tech evened its record at 12-12 with the loss.
It took just 38 minutes for
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Andres Donayre to register the Eagles' first point of the day as ERAU's second flight duo blanked Aria Canadell Solana and James Finnigan 8-0. The Panthers answered with Majed Alshaikh and Wade Ball's 8-5 win over
Luke de Caires and
Rodolfo Arreygue on court three, and JJ Clark and Ricardo Corona gave FIT a 2-1 edge with an 8-4 win over
Carlos Becke and
Deepak Vishavkarma at the top spot.
Vishavkarma was the last to finish his doubles match, but he was the first off the court in singles, pulling the Blue and Gold level with his 6-0, 7-6 (0) defeat of Tijmon Louisy at the third position.
Playing at No. 6, Donayre bested Ward Ball 6-3, 6-4, and 18
th-ranked Ortiz Couder held off Canadell Solana 7-6, 6-3 to put the Eagles up 4-2.
The clincher came on court five where de Caires battled Finnigan to a 7-6 (3) win in the first set and went on to win the match with a 6-3 decision in the second.
The last two matches both went to three sets. Arreygue dropped his first set 6-3 Alshaikh, but forced a third set with a 7-5 win in the second. The final frame was a battle between the fifth flight players and, in the end, it was Alshaikh who emerged with a 13-11 win.
Becke also dropped his first set against Corona, 6-4, on court two, but took the second 6-2, and capped the Eagles' scoring with a 7-5 win in the third.
The Eagles will close out the 2017 season on Tuesday when they host Florida Southern at the Crotty Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m.
