DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched its biggest win to date this season, upending top-ranked West Florida 6-3, Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Saturday's win marked the second time that the Eagles have earned a win against a team ranked No. 1 in NCAA II and improved their record to 3-2 on the year. The Argonauts fall to 5-1 with the loss.
The first match off the court was at No. 2 doubles were
Juan Ortiz Couder and Lucas Bos bested Alfonso Castellano and Nicholas Springer 8-3. Seventh-ranked
Rodolfo Arreygue and
Andres Donayre topped Serdar Bojediev and Nicolas Lecoutre 8-3 at the top spot, and Lucas Lesoeur and
Deepak Vishavkarma completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Robin Raifitin and Lucas Sanchez at the third position to give ERAU a 3-0 advantage heading into singles.
Playing his first contest at the No. 2 spot, Donayre was the first to finish his singles match as he quickly dispatched Lecoutre 6-1, 6-0.
At the fourth spot, Castellano gave the Argonauts their first point of the day with his 6-4, 6-4 win over Bos and Juan Cabrera made it 4-2 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Arreygue on court five.
The last three matches off the court all required three sets to determine the outcome. At No. 3 singles, Vishavkarma led early in the first set, but Sanchez battled back to claim the set 6-4. Vishavkarma rebounded from the setback to take the second and earned a hard-fought 7-5 win in the third to clinch the Eagle victory.
Bojediev got all he could handle from Ortiz Couder, but in the end, the seventh-ranked Argonaut pulled out a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win at the top spot, while Lucas Leseour capped the Eagles scoring with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 defeat of Juan Motta at No. 6 singles.
The Eagles have very little time to rest as they return to Sunshine State Conference play at 12 p.m. on Sunday when they travel to Melbourne to face Florida Tech.
