DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –Embry-Riddle Men's Tennis won the battle of two ranked teams on Wednesday as the NCAA II No. 10 Eagles downed NAIA No. 3 Keiser 6-3 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win improved the Eagles overall record to 8-2 on the year, while the Seahawks fell to 11-3 with the loss.
The first point of the day went to Keiser as the Seahawks' third flight doubles team of Arthur Bonnaud and Oliver Koeng fought past
Mickael Faucher and
Deepak Vishavkarma 8-6. However, seventh-ranked
Rodolfo Arreygue and
Andres Donayre pulled the Blue and Gold level with an 8-6 win over Marc Algeri and Andrew Connolly at the top spot.
The match at No. 2 doubles was a one-hour, 30-minute battle between the Eagles'
Juan Ortiz Couder and Lucas Bos, and Keiser's Vicente Lagos and Julian Turosienski. The ERAU tandem went up a break early, but the Seahwaks recorded a break of their own to tie things up at 5-5. Both both sides held serve over the next six games to force a tiebreaker, and in the end it was Ortiz Couder and Bos who were able to pull out a 9-8 (8-6) win to put the Eagles up 2-1.
Donayre and Arreygue were the first two Eagles off the court as Donayre dispatched Nicolas Guerschanik 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Arreygue bested Turosienski 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Playing at No. 3 singles, Vishavkarma assured the Eagles of the victory as he rebounded from his doubles loss to top 29
th-ranked Adrian Frutos 6-4, 6-4 for the clinching point.
Keiser managed to get a point back courtesy of No. 38 Bonnaud's three-set (6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4) win over Bos at the fourth singles position, but Ortiz Couder answered with a three-set victory of his own, downing fifth-ranked Lagos 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-4 on court one.
The last match off the court also went to three sets and it was Koeng who was able to hold off Faucher 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-3 to close out the day's scoring.
The Eagles' next match will be at 3:30 p.m. on March 21 when they host Webber International at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
