CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team continued to make program history when the Eagles won its first NCAA II South Regional tournament game on Friday, shutting out Rollins 2-0 at South Quad Field on the campus of Lee University. The Eagles are now 11-5-2 on the year and advance to play host and No. 2 seed Lee in the round of 32 on Sunday.
"It's always tricky to play a team three times in a season, much less twice in a week, but our players were ready for it," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon. "The first goal was big because both teams were working hard on the defensive end. The second goal gave us some breathing room and allowed us to put together a plan at halftime to manage the second half. While we didn't do a great job of settling the ball down and possessing, we did well organizing defensively and still looked dangerous when we countered in the second half. Overall, I'm pleased to get this win under our belt and now look to Sunday's match-up versus a talented Lee team. But I'd be remiss if I didn't note the significance of our program's first NCAA win. We hope this opens the lid for even more of our programs to do the same as Embry-Riddle is a really special place."
The Eagles played stout defense throughout the contest, particularly in the second half and it was a defender who produced the offense with senior
Sophie Brundin netting both goals on Friday.
The Eagles put pressure on the Tars from the first whistle firing three shots on frame within the first 4:16. The Tars were on their heels for much of the first half as they were outshot by the Eagles 12-6. Rollins' first shot of the day was on frame, but ERAU goalkeeper
Dana Ruchti had little trouble hauling in the save and moments later the Eagles were back on offense.
With 4:23 left in the first half,
Isabelle Navren launched a free kick into the box after drawing a foul about 45 yards out on the right sight of the pitch. Brundin rose above the Rollins defense and headed her fourth goal of the year into the upper left of the goal to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Less than three minutes later the duo combined on another set piece opportunity, this time from the corner flag. Navren's low, driven corner kick landed just inside the top of the 18-yard box and Brundin struck a side volley into the upper 90 to put ERAU up 2-0 at the half.
Rollins owned the second half shot advantage 13-7, but the Eagles' stuck to their game plan and made key plays, including a save on the line by
Julia Olsson with 25 minutes left, to keep the Tars off the scoreboard.
Ruchti finished with four saves, while Elena Beasley collected 10 saves for the Tars who ended their season at 12-5-1.
