Donayre Leads Men’s Tennis on First Day of ITA Regionals

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team opened play at the 2019 USTA/ITA Division II South Region Championships by going undefeated in doubles play and earning three wins in singles. 

Tournament play at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex began with the doubles matches as both ERAU tandems took the court. The Eagles picked their first win of the day when reigning regional champions and second-seeded Juan Ortiz Couder and Andres Donayre dispatched Spring Hill's Cedric Nitz and Fergus O'Rourke 8-3. In the other match, Lucas Bos and Alexis Guedy battled Mobile's Georg Trompler and Tanguy David to an 8-7 (4) win.

Singles play saw Donayre and Guedy come away with straight-set victories in the first round as Donayre defeated Nitz 6-1, 6-2, and Guedy bested Alabama-Huntsville's Sebastian Rohrbach 7-6 (3), 7-5.

In the second round of singles, which was played on Friday afternoon, Donayre faced Brandon Phan and outlasted the Florida Southern player 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Guedy played Barry's Alejandro Ortega tough in the first set of his second-round match but was unable to get by the tournament's No. 7 seed, falling 7-6 (2), 6-2

Play resumes at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the second round of doubles. Donayre will take on Leo De Sousa of Delta State in the singles quarterfinals slated for 10 a.m.
