DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Rollins with a 50-41 defeat of the Tars, Wednesday at the ICI Center. The win improved ERAU's Sunshine State Conference record to 6-5 and evened the Eagles' overall ledger at 8-8.
Nikki Tucker and
Liz Behan were the offensive leaders for ERAU. Tucker needed just one rebound for her second double-double of the season, finishing with a game-high 13 points, nine boards, six assists and two steals. Behan, who played the final 10 minutes of the game with four fouls, had a 12-point night, including going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
The Tars used the long-range shot to stick close to the Eagles in the first quarter, connecting on three of six attempts from beyond the arc. Rollins led early in the contest scoring five unanswered point on the way to an 8-4 advantage. The Eagles quickly closed the gap, however, and at the end of the first 10 minutes, the score was tied at 13-13.
The Eagles won the second-quarter battle with both defense and offense. ERAU shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from the field, while the defense forced five Rollins turnovers and limited the visitors to just six points in the frame. At the half, the Eagles led 27-19.
Lucy Leen opened the third quarter with another three-pointer and at the 6:26 mark, the Eagle lead and been trimmed to four (27-23). The Eagles responded with an 8-2 spurt to go back up by 10, but the Tars ended the quarter with a run of their own and going into the fourth, the Eagle margin was just three points (37-34).
A free throw by Maria Atanassov-Toma made in a two-point (37-35) game two and half minutes into the final period. On the Eagles' next trip down the floor,
Eva Zaragoza knocked down a jumper in the paint and the Eagles connected on two subsequent possessions and forced a pair of Tar turnovers to build the lead back up to nine (44-35). The Eagles were able to extend their advantage to 11 points late in the quarter before closing out the game with the nine-point victory.
Grace Alfieri led the three-point charge for the Tars, going 4-for-8 from long range to match Tucker's 13 points. Leen was the other Rollins player in double digits with 10 points.
The Eagles will be back at the ICI Center on Saturday to host Saint Leo. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
