Women’s Rowing Beats Jacksonville in Dual on Saturday

10/29/2022 9:39:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Fresh off a top-10 result at the season-opening Head of the Charles last weekend, the Embry-Riddle women's rowing team continued its fall schedule by taking two of the first three spots in Saturday's three-piece, 6,000-meter dual against Jacksonville at the Negaard Rowing Center.

It was another strong early-season test for the Eagles as the Dolphins are the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions, and they competed at the 2022 NCAA I Championship. Last season, the two programs were scheduled to go head-to-head, but the dual was canceled due to weather. However, poor conditions once again plagued the six-boat field consisting of two ERAU and four JU vessels.

Embry-Riddle's first Varsity Eight boat of Megan Byrne (coxswain), Shelby Ernst, Kendra Sander, Sofia Lorenzini, Alexandra Weilert, Elise Dezotell, Helena Schmidt, Soleil Edwards, and Veronika Zdrazil were nearly even with Jacksonville's first Varsity Eight boat through the first two pieces (4,000 meters), just one second back. It was in the third piece where the Eagles shot ahead by eight seconds to win with a time of 24:38.7 compared to a 24:46.6 for the Dolphins.

Meanwhile, Christiana Carotenuto (coxswain), Helen Carey, Gwendolyn Powell, Alexandria Fife-Winslow, Caterina Hart, Aria MosesBriella Goldenberg, Reagan Hurt, and Kristen Vigna finished on the podium in third as the nine Eagles stopped the clock at 25:54.3, clear of the fourth-place boat by one minute and 24 seconds.

Embry-Riddle has one final fall regatta remaining - the Head of the South located on the Savannah River in Augusta, Georgia, on Saturday, Nov. 12.
