Women’s Rowing Remains Undefeated in 2023; Wins All Four Races Against Barry and Rochester on Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's rowing team stayed hot last Saturday by finishing first in all four races versus Barry and Rochester. The Eagles have yet to be defeated in a competition since the 2023 spring season began. Each race was held on a 2,000 meter course around the Buccaneers' Ronald W. Shane Watersports Center. It was the first time in program history the Blue and Gold traveled to compete on Barry's home waters.

Conditions were fairly calm to start, but the wind increased as the morning went on and caused a slight cross tailwind. An increase in boat traffic also produced challenging wakes.

In the first race of the day, the Eagles upset defending Sunshine State Conference Varsity 8 champion Barry by 1.6 seconds, and beat Rochester by 19 seconds, as Megan Byrne (coxswain), Soleil Edwards, Kendra Sander, Shelby Ernst, Sofia Lorenzini, Elise Dezotell, Alexandra Weilert, Aria Moses and Helena Schmidt posted a time of 7:19.5.

A Varsity 4 rematch was in store for the next race. The Eagles and Buccaneers both competed in Fours at the Head of the Charles back in October, and it was Barry that edged Embry-Riddle by just under two seconds. However, the scripts were flipped this time around. Alexis Mathis (coxswain), Veronika Zdrazil, Caterina Hart, Alexandria Fife-Winslow, and Kristen Vigna got revenge for the Blue and Gold with a massive 25.3-second victory (8:09.9) over the Buccaneers (8:35.2) and Yellowjackets (8:36.1).

The second Varsity 8 race was just as close as the first, partly because the Eagles' lineup was nearly identical as in race one. Eight of the nine seats were the same except for seat one, which was occupied by Zdrazil. ERAU stopped the clock at 7:20.1 followed by Barry (7:22.6) and Rochester (7:24.2).

Lastly, the Eagles' second Varsity 4 boat launched into action against the Buccaneers. Mathis (coxswain), Fife-Winslow, Schmidt, Reagan Hurt and Briella Goldenberg soundly handled Barry by 35.8 seconds, stopping the clock at 8:10.1.

The season continues on Saturday, March 18 when Embry-Riddle travels to Stetson for the DeLand Double Duals.
