Women’s Rowing Claims Both Races Against Barry in Program’s First-Ever Home Dual

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Program history was made on Saturday as Embry-Riddle women's rowing hosted a dual for the first time ever. After traveling to Miami Shores two weeks prior, the Eagles welcomed Barry for a rematch with four races on the Halifax River and beat the Buccaneers each time. Competitors raced north for 2,000 meters until reaching the finish line placed just before the Veterans Memorial Bridge that connects City Island to the peninsula.

First up was the Varsity 8 boat of Megan Byrne (coxswain), Shelby Ernst, Kendra Sander, Aria Moses, Sofia Lorenzini, Elise Dezotell, Alexandra Weilert, Soleil Edwards, and Helena Schmidt. The Eagle-powered shell bested Barry with a 7:42.6, 8.2 seconds faster than the Buccaneers. It was the third win of the season in Eights by this specific boat of nine Eagles.

Alexis Mathis (coxswain), Veronika Zdrazil, Reagan Hurt, Alexandria Fife-Winslow, and Kristen Vigna continued the success in Varsity 4 with a winning time of 8:49.6 compared to the Buccaneers' 9:29.9.

It was the Eagles' largest margin of victory by an Eight (8.2 seconds) and a Four (40.3 seconds) boat this season.

After an hour break, the teams returned to the course, though to difficult rowing conditions. Even though the Varsity Eight boat of Byrne (coxswain), Ernst, Sander, Dezotell, Lorenzini, Zdrazil, Weilert, Edwards, and Schmidt and the Varsity Four boat of Mathis (coxswain), Fife-Winslow, Caterina Hart, Hurt and Briella Goldenberg downed Barry once again, the times were not submitted due to the choppiness of the water.

Embry-Riddle remained undefeated against Sunshine State Conference competition in 2023.

Championship season begins next week with the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championships on April 1 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
