Men’s Rowing Earns Multiple Silver Medals at 2023 FIRA Championships

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's rowing team grabbed a pair of silver medals in Varsity 4 at the 2023 Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships to place sixth with 18 total points. The Eagles finished ahead of Florida State (17.5), Florida (7), and Tampa (0). All races were held at Nathan Benderson Park.

The first race of the day saw Chase Nilsson (coxswain), Roman Linkugel, Igor Martinovic, Ognjen Srbinovic, Blake Paynter, Joshua Thornburgh, Ike Dunavant, Vaclav Kuncak, and Maximus Weitekamper place just off the podium in fourth at a time of 6:12.46 in Varsity 8, eight seconds behind Stetson in third. The Eagles did best UCF, Rollins, and Florida State.

ERAU's entry in Varsity 4 "B" of Maricarin Minnock (coxswain), Matthew Talty, Srbinovic, Dunavant, and Thornburgh earned the first hardware of the day for the program finishing second with a 7:10.98 ahead of Jacksonville and Florida.

Lastly, Nilsson (coxswain), Paynter, Linkugel, Martinovic, and Kuncak received a silver medal with a second-place result of 6:39.07 in Varsity 4, just over three seconds away from winner Florida Tech. The Eagles did beat Jacksonville, Stetson, Florida, Rollins, and UCF. It was the fastest time by an ERAU Four boat this season. 

Jacksonville dominated almost every race, scoring 109 points to win FIRA on the men's side. Rollins placed second with 60 points, and Florida Tech was close behind with 59.

Championship season continues with the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships from April 15-16 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. All races will be held on Melton Hill Lake.
