PHILADELPHIA – The Embry-Riddle men's rowing team started off its 2024-25 season with a stroke of success on Saturday, as both the Freshmen 8s and Varsity 8s showed out at the 2024 Head of the Schuylkill, a 3,800m course downstream on the historic Schuylkill River.

"The men raced hard today," said head coach Grant Maddock. "It shows in the results with some of the top programs in the country in attendance. Although we didn't exactly hit our mark, climbing up some spots is always nice and should leave us hungry to improve next weekend at the Princeton Chase, where we will see a lot of the same teams."

The Freshmen 8s – Sebastian Sanchez, Kimble Ettelt, Sawyer Dalton, Aidan Powers, Dan Ronen, Douglas Griswold, Griffin King, Kemal Cengiz, and coxed by Sam Prelewicz – were up first at mid-morning, and drew immediate recognition with the fastest start of the field, and faster than 36 varsity boats, reaching St. Joe's at 3:00.9. ERAU kept the pace, reaching Angels at 8:15.8, still second among the field's splits. When the bow crossed, it was 11:59.281, good enough for second place, and ahead of the likes of hometown Drexel, Temple and La Salle in the 19-boat field.

The afternoon slate began with ERAU's Varsity 8s, featuring Ognjen Srbinovic, Connor Goepfert, James Zbitnoff, Igor Martinovic, Sam Clode, Ben Kerns, Roman Linkugel, Maximus Weitekamper, and coxswain Connor Matthews. The Eagles' V8 battled against the likes of Philadelphia's own UPenn, Drexel, Temple, and other Division I caliber boats like Lehigh and Fordham, rowing the 3,800m in a strong 11:46.281 for 11th place in the 50-boat field. The V8 Eagles hit St. Joe's at 2:55.1, and Angels at 8:08.1.

With the success on the Schuylkill, the Eagles will turn their attention next to the Princeton Chase on Nov. 3 on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
