HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - For the second year in a row, the Embry-Riddle men's golf team notched a top-five result to open the season by claiming fifth at the Griffin Invitational with an 880 (295-290-295) total. The Eagles bested a couple of Sunshine State Conference foes in No. 25 Lynn (882) and RV Tampa (891). Play was hosted by Saint Leo at the par-71 course at the Mission Inn Resort. It was the first time Embry-Riddle competed in this event.

It was a promising start to the tournament as Ian Ball recorded an eagle on his opening par-5 hole. Embry-Riddle climbed to as high as third midway through the round, just two strokes off the top team, with Ball and Edoardo Scialanga up into a tie for second before facing a challenging back nine.

Scialanga (72-71-71=214) posted a consistent final round with 16 pars and a birdie to capture his third consecutive top-10 result (T-3rd) dating back to last season. Ball (72-71-75=218) accumulated a team-high three below-par scores on Tuesday to cap off his first tournament as a member of the Blue and Gold in a tie for 16th.

Tiago Barni (75-74-75) ended the competition with 224 strokes with Joon Kim (76-74-75=225) one shot back in his first collegiate tournament. Ryan Gear (81-75-74) rounded things out for the Eagles with a 230.

Palm Beach Atlantic (865) surged ahead three spots on the final day to take the team title. No. 12 Saint Leo (869) came in second while Eckerd and No. T-15 Coker (870) tied for third.

The Triton's Reggie Fear (205) finished eight under par to win by six strokes on the individual side.

The Eagles have a quick turnaround before their next tournament, next week's Jay Jennison Cup on Sept. 23-24 in St. Augustine, Florida.
