CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle women's volleyball team might not have looked like a stern test entering its final match of the Clearwater Christian College volleyball tournament with a 3-20 record, but after a tough 3-2 victory over the Eagles the host Clearwater Christian Cougars sooned learned?a team's record doesn't indicate the talent it possesses.
The Eagles fell behind 1-0 as the host?took the first game 30-20, but?ERU battled back to take a 2-1 match lead with a 30-28 win in the second and 30-26 margin in the third.? Noela Tola (Tirana, Albania) and?Sue Delahanty (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) both led the charge with 20?and 18 kills, respectively.? Nancy Salb recorded seven kills, but was tremendous defensively with 25 digs to lead all players in the match.??
The critical game proved to be the fourth as the Eagles looked headed to record their fourth victory of the season and snap a?six-match losing skid.? Embry-Riddle maintained a strong advantage throughout the game with a 9-0 run to open the game, then held a 19-10?lead midway through the game.?
ERU (3-21 overall)?led 27-19 with victory in sight, but the scrappy Cougars battled back.? CCC (20-4)went on a?4-0 run to cut the?deficit to 27-23, then?ERU's Dani Brazolino recorded one of her nine kills in the match to make it 28-23 in favor of the Blue and Gold.? Following a Heidi Guenther kill, the Eagles were up 29-24 with serving and defensive specialist Marcia Bullara-Smith?on serve.? However, Jenny Goodson recorded one of her 26 kills?on the day to cut the lead to 29-25.? This kill ignited a?7-0 run for the Cougars as they closed out the amazing comeback with a 31-29 victory in game four.??
After CCC?libero Amy Madeiros made an amazing diving dig over her head from far outside the Cougars court near the scorer's table which landed for a kill in the Eagles court to tie the game at 29-29, a?questionable call gave the?cardiac Cougars new life. ??The?scrutiny from the Eagles came after Sue Delahanty's attack appeared?to land inside the far left corner of the Cougars half of the court, which would have given Embry-Riddle a 30-29 lead.? However, the referees deemed a replay necessary after one line judge ruled the ball in and the other said it was out.? The Eagles looked on in disbelief, as did the Cougar players and coaches who had the best vantage point since it was right in front of their bench and?all also had looks that the ball was in.? Eagles head coach Trina Keeton couldn't press the issue too much as she was issued a?yellow?card earlier in the match on another?questionable call at the net on a set attempt by?Guenther.? This gave?Rebekah White the change to record a critical kill to give?the Cougars a 30-29 lead and then Janelle Bordean served the game out with a service ace?to win 31-29.
With the home crowd involved and the momentum swing their way, the Cougars opened the final game with an 8-3 run.? Embry-Riddle closed the game to 10-7, but CCC responded by expanding its lead to 13-8 before handing the?ball over to Bordean who served out the game as White and Goodson combined to block the final Eagle attack to win 15-8.
