DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle women's tennis earned its third win over a ranked opponent this season as the third-ranked Eagles defeated No. 6 Brenau 7-2, Thursday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. ERAU is now 6-1 on the year while Brenau moves to 2-2 overall.
Seventh-ranked
Rocio Frej Vitalle and
Ekaterina Kamendova was the first doubles team to register a win, downing Hannah Thompson and Eline Nagels 8-0 at the No. 2 spot.
Kristina Marova and
Paola Montero followed with an 8-2 defeat of Theresa Neumeyr and Stephanie Moniz at the third position and fourth-ranked
Yi Ching Chen and
Josefine Strom held off Brenau's eighth-ranked tandem of Lyn See Choo and Maria Perdome-Medina 8-6 at the top spot to complete the doubles sweep.
It took 14th-ranked Kamendova less than an hour to notch the Eagles' first singles win of the day as she bested Neumeyr 6-1, 6-0 on court three. Playing next to Kamendova, fifth-ranked Frej Vitalle was the next off the court, scoring the clincher with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Perdomo-Medina at No. 2.
The Eagles won two of the remaining four singles matches as Montero topped Tiffany Almeida (6-2, 6-1), Marova downed Thompson (6-3, 6-2).
Nagels recorded the Tigers' first team point with a 6-2, 6-0 decision against Strom at No. 5.
The longest match of the day was at No. 1 singles where a top-10 battle raged between No. 6 Choo and No. 8 Chen. Chen took the first set 6-3, but Choo came back to take the second 6-2 and force a decisive third set. Choo rode the momentum of her second-set win into the third stanza and bested Chen 10-3 to win the match.
The Eagles will be back in action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they host NCAA I Eastern Kentucky at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
