Eagles Improve to 9-1 Win 9-0 Win Over Midwestern State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team ran its overall record to 9-1 with a 9-0 victory over Midwestern State, Monday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are currently on a seven-match winning streak, while the NCAA II Mustangs, coached by former ERAU head coach Scott Linn, even their record at 5-5.

Simon Felix and Peter Francis picked up the Eagles' first point of the day with an 8-2 win over Jay Henton and Luke Joyce at No. 3 doubles. Chris Freeman and J.R. Leonik followed with an 8-3 decision against Colby Meeks and Mario Urban at the second doubles spot, and the top-ranked tandem of Adrian Bayh and Patrick Besch completed the Eagles' doubles sweep by holding off Jarrod Liston and Tomas Grejtale 8-6.

Freeman, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA singles poll, wasted little time in recording the Eagles' fourth point, topping Urban 6-1, 6-2 at the top singles spot. Reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week Felix scored the clincher with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Buborykin at No. 3 and Besch earned a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Joyce at the third position.

On the fourth court, Bayh dropped the first five games to Liston, but the senior was undaunted by the deficit and came all the way back to win the set 7-6 with a 7-3 decision in the tiebreaker. The comeback provided momentum for Bayh in the second stanza as he topped the Mustang sophomore, 6-3.

Spennare followed with a straight set (6-2, 6-2) decision again Henton at No. 6. The last match to reach completion was between Francis and Grejtale at No. 5 singles. Francis took the first set 6-3, but Grejtale pulled out a 7-6 (2) win in the second to force a third set tiebreaker. Grejtale moved ahead 9-8 in the tiebreaker, but Francis fought off match point and scored the next three points to pull out an 11-9 win and take the match.

The Eagles will make up a match, originally scheduled for Mar. 11, against Cleveland State on Thursday. The match is slated for 3:30 p.m. at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
