MOBILE, Ala. – For the 12th straight year, the Embry-Riddle men's tennis team recorded a win in its first match of the national tournament, shutting out Belhaven 5-0 in the second round of the 2012 NAIA National Championship at the Copeland –Cox Tennis Complex on Tuesday. The Eagles, who received a first-round bye as the tournament's No. 2 seed, improved their overall record to 19-3 and advance to the program's seventh consecutive national tournament quarterfinal where they will face the winner of Wednesday's match between Xavier (La.) and Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) at 1 p.m. (CST) on Thursday.
The Eagles got their first point of the day at No. 3 doubles where
Simon Felix and
Peter Francis bested David Mejia and Daniel Prado 8-2. The top-ranked tandem of
Patrick Besch and
Adrian Bayh gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead with an 8-3 defeat of Nicolas Orsorio and Gabriel Prado at the top doubles spot. At No. 2 doubles
Chris Freeman and
J.R. Leonik completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 decision against Jefferson Nino and Daniel Duarte to give the Blue and Gold a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.
The Eagles continued to dominate play in singles as all six players that took the court for the Eagles earned wins in their respective first sets. Besch was the first to finish his singles match on court two where he dispatched Gabriel Prado 6-1, 6-1. The clincher came at the No. 4 spot where Bayh downed Duarte 6-0, 6-1 to propel the Eagles into the quarterfinal round.
Belhaven closed its 2012 campaign at 16-4 with the loss.
