ERAU Women Score Shutout Against Warriors in National Tournament Opener

MOBILE, Ala. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team registered a 5-0 shutout against Lewis-Clark State in the second round of the NAIA National Tournament, Wednesday at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center. The match was the first of the tournament for the third-ranked Eagles who received a first-round bye due to their No. 3 seeding. The Eagles improved their overall record 21-3, while 14th-seeded Warriors exited the tournament and ended their season at 8-15.

All three of the Eagles' doubles teams showed a little rust from a three-week layoff with no matches against outside competition, but were able to find their rhythm and won all three doubles points to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Rocio Frej Vitalle ended the Eagles' match at No. 2 doubles with an emphatic overhead slam as she and Ekaterina Kamendova topped Barb Snecker and Miranda Duggan 8-4. Kristina Marova and Paola Montero followed with an 8-6 win over Samantha Teigen and Bryn Oliveira at the third doubles spot. At No. 1 doubles, Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Strom fell behind early (3-2) to Dominika Jasova and Marina Wold, but rebounded to win the last four games and take the match 8-4 to secure the doubles sweep.

Frej Vitalle was the first Eagle to finish her singles match on court two as she dispatched Snecker in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. On the court right next door to Frej Vitalle, Kamendova improved her overall singles record to a team-best 23-4 with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Duggan at the third singles position to score the clincher for the Blue and Gold.

The Eagles will be back in action at 9 a.m. (CST) on Thursday when they take on Lindsey Wilson in the national quarterfinals. The Blue Raiders upset No. 6 seed Point Loma Nazarene to advance.
