Embry-Riddle Snags Three Sun Conference Weekly Awards

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Sun Conference announced its' weekly fall sports award winners on Monday afternoon with three Embry-Riddle student-athletes earning weekly honors. Jordan Holcomb (volleyball), Evans Kirwa (men's cross country) and Ellie Staker (women's cross country) took home their respective sport awards for the Eagles.

Holcomb helped the Eagles to a 3-1 record at this weekend's Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University, including wins over No. 7 Grand View and No. 22 Viterbo. The senior recorded three double-doubles at the tournament, including a 26-kill, 14-dig performance in a 3-1 win over No. 7 Grand View. Holcomb currently leads the Eagles in kills/set (3.91) and ranks 18th in the NAIA in that category.

The ERAU volleyball team will return to action on Friday, Sept. 21 as they host Southeastern in the first conference match of the season at 7 p.m.

Kirwa barely missed out on winning his second race of the 2012 season, placing second behind unattached Jeremy Criscione (a participant in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon). Kirwa's 24:14.53 was less than six seconds off Criscione's winning mark, and was the third-fastest time in Embry-Riddle program history. Kirwa's time also marked the fastest the native Kenyan had recorded at the Mountain Dew Invitational.

Staker posted the second-fastest time in Eagle history at the Mountain Dew Invitational on Saturday. Staker finished 12th overall at the meet, running an 18:08.07 for the Eagles, breaking her personal record by a full 39 seconds as well as bettering last week's time by 1:28.

The Eagles' cross country teams will be hosting the 2012 Asics Embry-Riddle Classic, Embry-Riddle's lone home meet of the season, on Saturday, Sept. 22.
