Embry-Riddle Track Hits Six Qualifying Standards at Indoor/Outdoor Challenge

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – ­­Led by a pair of national champions in Reta Woodard and Nicole Bonk, the Embry-Riddle Track & Field team posted six NAIA Qualifying Standards at the ERAU Indoor/Outdoor Challenge on Sunday at the ERAU Track Complex.
 
In the day's first event, Nicole Bonk placed second in the 3000m Race Walk in an “A” standard time of 15:09.74. Also finishing second, earning a “B” standard in her event was Breanna Goring, who recorded a 9.13 in the 60m hurdles.
 
Karina Coelho won the 1000m and the 800m in times of 3:06.56 and 2:23.38, respectively. Both times are three seconds shy of a “B” standard.
 
Coelho also ran in the 4x800m relay with Kira Ball, Martina Tafoya and Lauren Eschbach. That team finished in first place with a time of 9:58.88, five seconds off the “B” standard.
 
Alec Hernandez won the 1000m in a “B” standard time of 2:32.69, the only male track athlete to hit a qualifying time.
 
Senior Leon Robinson fell one hundredth of a second shy of a “B” standard in winning the 200m with a time of 21.97. In the 600m, Joe Fuller placed second and was two seconds off the “B” standard with a time of 1:24.05.
 
The Eagles excelled in the field events as Woodard and Mike Edwards each established new school records. First it was Woodard in the weight throw with an “A” standard distance of 19.24m, winning the event by more than 9.0m over the second-place finisher. Edwards then won the high jump with an “A” standard height of 2.13m, .23m better than the second-place finisher.
 
Adam Holdsworth was the final qualifier for the Eagles, registering an “A” standard in the pole vault with a mark of 4.90m.
 
A number of Eagle athletes have established themselves as contenders at a national level, including Woodard (weight throw) and Edwards (high jump) each of whom currently own the top mark in their respective events in the NAIA this season. In addition, Bonk (3000mRW) owns the second fastest time while Holdsworth (pole vault), Hernandez (1000m) and Goring (60mH) are also in the top-10 in their respective events.

The Blue and Gold will be back in action on Jan. 26 when the teams travel to Gainesville, Fla. for the Jimmy Carnes meet hosted by the University of Florida.
