Bonk, Edwards Earn National Titles at Indoor Track Championships

Bonk, Edwards earn national titles on day two
GENEVA, Ohio – Nicole Bonk and Mike Edwards highlighted the second day of NAIA Indoor National Championships for the ERAU track and field team, as each athlete captured an individual national title on Friday.
 
In the first individual event on day two, Bonk captured the Eagles' first individual national title of the 2013 NAIA Indoor National Championships. Bonk, a senior from Chalfont, Pa., won her second consecutive title in the women's 3000m Race Walk, winning the event by 22 seconds. Bonk's time of 13:53.63 is a Collegiate and NAIA record, besting Amber Antonia's (Wisconsin-Parkside) time of 13:56.06, which was set in 2002.
 
Edwards followed that up with an impressive performance of his own, winning the national championship in the men's high jump with a school-record mark of 2.18m.

Defending champion in the women's weight throw, Reta Woodard, placed second in the event with a final throw of 18.85m. She earned eight points for the Eagles, losing to Gabriella Dixson of Concorida (Ore.) who threw a personal best 19.14m for the victory.
 
Breanna Goring advanced out of her preliminary race in the 60m hurdles with a new personal best time of 8.80, but was unable to advance out of the semifinals as she ran a 8.91, missing the cut by 0.11 seconds.
 
Karina Coelho ran a strong race in the 800m, placing fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 2:20.15. Coelho will compete in both the 800m and the mile event finals tomorrow.
 
In the 4x800m relay finals, the group of Lauren Eschbach, Martina Tafoya, Coelho and Bonk placed eighth with a time of 9:35.20, earning one point for the Eagles.
 
Kristina Kendrick placed fourth in her 600m preliminary with a time of 1:35.81, but missed qualifying for the event finals by .90 seconds.
 
Alec Hernandez also participated in the 1000m preliminary and after a strong race near the front, tripped just short of the finish line, recording a time of 2:36.72.
 
On the women's side, the Eagles' have already racked up 19 points, placing them second behind Oklahoma Baptist (24). The men have tallied 10 points and are currently tied with Valley City State and Aquinas for seventh place.
 
The final day of the NAIA Indoor National Championships gets underway with the shot put and triple jump at 10 a.m. The first track event will be the mile, which is set for 12:25 p.m.
