DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Steady rain ended the annual Embry-Riddle Eagles vs. Daytona Cubs exhibition game after just three innings on Wednesday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark as the Single-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs held a 3-2 lead over the NAIA No. 8 Eagles. Embry-Riddle jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the hosts in the top of the first and senior
Andrew Lytle was dominant in his two innings of work, exiting the game after two frames with the two-run lead.
2010 third-rounder Zach Cates took the mound for Daytona in the first, issuing a walk to
Tyler Robbins before
Jordan Johnson reached on a fielder's choice that forced Robbins out at second.
Jeff Lemon reached on an error in the next at-bat before
Kevin Lindheim collected the only Eagle hit of the evening with a single through the right side, loading the bases for
Kyle Chastain.
Chastain grounded a Cates' pitch to short, forcing Lindheim out at second, but the Eagle centerfielder was able to beat the throw to first to drive in a run and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. During the following at-bat, Chastain swiped second and when the throw went to second, Lemon was able to touch home to push the Embry-Riddle advantage to 2-0.
Lytle, a Missoula, Mont. native, punctuated the bottom of the first inning by striking out the Cubs' number one prospect, Javier Baez for the second out of the inning before getting Jorge Soler, who signed one of the richest deals in Cubs' history last season, to pop up in the infield to end the frame.
The Eagles were held in check by Cates in the second before Lytle stranded the bases loaded in the home-half of the inning with a flyout to left center.
The Cubs got to
Chad Modomo in the bottom of the third as the rain poured at Jackie Robinson, and after the Cubs took a 3-2 lead in the inning, the game was called.
Embry-Riddle will be back in action on Friday on the road against Florida Memorial at 3 p.m. in Sun Conference play. The two teams complete their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
