20 student-athletes to represent ERAU at NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle track and field team is set to travel to Marian, Ind. for the 2013 NAIA Outdoor National Championships. The Eagles will have a strong presence at the national meet as they will be sending 20 athletes (12 male, eight female) to compete in a variety of events.
The men are led by
Mike Edwards,
Vincent Bett, and
Adam Holdsworth, each of whom have qualified in three separate events. Edwards enters the championships as the top seed in the high jump, and the NAIA Indoor National Champion, while Bett is seeded fifth in the 3000m Steeplechase. Holdsworth and
Alec Hernandez are the only other male athletes seeded in the top 10 of their events, Holdsworth is seeded eighth in the pole vault and Hernandez enters the 1500m as the 10
th seed.
The Eagles will also have
Alex Dori competing in the 400m hurdles where he is 20
th and
Jacob Dordick will participate in the half marathon as the 32
nd seed. A.J Bales rounds out the individual competitors for the men as he enters the pole vault as the 18
th seed.
The Blue and Gold have just one relay in the field and that is the 4x100m relay team that is seeded ninth. The pool of runners that can participate in the event are
Joe DiGregorio,
Steve McGinley,
Harish Prasad,
Bryan Ray and
Kameron Turner.
Nicole Bonk,
Kristina Kendrick,
Breanna Goring and
Reta Woodard, who all qualified in the top five of their events, lead the women's squad. Woodard is the only Eagles to qualify in the top five of two events as she enters as the top seed in the hammer throw and the third seed in the discus.
Nicole Bonk looks to claim her second National Championship this season and defend her 5,000m race walk title, but she has some competition as she enters as the second seed in the event. Bonk is also eligible to participate in the 4x800m relay where the Blue and Gold are the 15
th seed.
Kristina Kendrick, like several other Eagles, is slated to compete in two events, the 200m where she is seeded 12
th and the 400m where she is the third seed.
Breanna Goring is the only other female to qualify in the top five of her event, as she is seeded fifth in the 100m hurdles.
Karina Coelho is the lone Eagle that could participate in three events at the meet as she is qualified ninth in the 800m, eighth in the 1500m and is a possible participant for the 4x800m relay team.
Martina Tafoya is also a possible relay participant, however, she is also the ninth seed in the 400m hurdles as an individual.
Two other student-athletes,
Lauren Eschbach and
Holly Sandon, are in the pool of participants to take part in the females lone relay.
The NAIA Outdoor National Championships will be held at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind. The meet gets underway on Thursday, May 23, beginning with the decathlon at 10 a.m. The first individual event will be the women's hammer throw at 10 a.m. while the first track event is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100m relay trials.
