Froshaug Named NAIA National Player of the Year

Andrea Froshaug
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Just days after finishing as a national semifinalist for the first time in program history, the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team added several individual awards to its list of accomplishments in 2014. Headlining the list of ERAU honorees was Andrea Froshaug who received the NAIA's highest women's soccer honor as she was named the Select Sport America - NAIA National Player of the Year.

Monday's award was one of many for the forward from Oslo, Norway in 2014. A first team All-Sun Conference selection, Froshaug was the Eagles' leading scorer in 2014 with 39 points on 16 goals and seven assists. She registered at least one point in 15 of the Eagles' 21 games, including a five-goal performance against Florida Memorial on Sept. 26. The Sun Conference's Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 1, she also netted game-winning goals against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) and 2014 national champion Lindsey Wilson. Froshaug also got the job done in the classroom as her 3.90 GPA in Business Administration afforded her Capital One Academic All-America First Team and Academic All-Conference honors.

"Our program is thrilled to have its first national player of the year!" ERAU Head Coach Samantha Bohon commented. "The NAIA is loaded with strong female soccer players, so it's quite an honor for Andrea to be voted as the best by the coaches on the committee. She's incredibly explosive and became much more consistent this season, scoring or assisting in almost every big game. Andrea would be the first to also recognize her teammates as major contributors towards this award. So, this honor is a reflection of our entire team's performance, as well as Andrea. This was a special season, and it's nice to receive this acknowledgment by the coaches in our final year in the NAIA."

Embry-Riddle led all NAIA women's soccer programs with six All-America honorees, including first team selections Froshaug, Helena Hansson and Julia Karlernas, second team honorees Emmie Johansson and Olivia Lynch and third team pick Hanna Rolfsen.

A sophomore Eskilstuna, Sweden, Hansson is making her second appearance on the All-America first team after earning the honor as a freshman in 2012. After taking a year off, Hansson returned to anchor the Eagle defense in 2014 as a central defender, starting in 20 of the Eagles' 21 contests. The Oct. 20 Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week also contributed to the Eagle offense, tallying a goal and an assist on the year.

"Helena is one of the best all-around players we've had here at ERAU," Bohon stated. "We considered playing her in four different positions early this season before settling in at center back. Her speed as well as her strong technical ability made her a tough player to beat in the back. You put her alongside Hanna, and they were nicknamed "The Twin Towers" for their dominating presence in the center."

A newcomer to the Eagles' midfield this season, Karlernas (Torsby, Sweden) started in all 21 contests and led all ERAU field players in minutes played with 1,709. The Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year and a first team All-Conference selection, she totaled 23 points on eight goals and seven assists and scored the game-winner against Hastings in the second round of the national tournament.

"There's no doubt that bolstering our midfield was a key to our team's success this year, Bohon said. "Julia played a big role in this improvement. With a relentless work rate and quickness, Julia allowed us to be more aggressive on both sides of the ball. She played like an experienced veteran all season long."

Lynch (Naples, Fla.) is the first ERAU goalkeeper since Julie Greenlee (2002, 03) to earn All-America honors. Lynch moved up to the All-Conference first team after garnering second team recognition a year ago. The Naples, Fla. junior played 1,906 minutes and has started 20 of her 21 appearances this season. She recorded 47 saves and eight shutouts, and closed out her junior campaign with a 0.68 goals against average. An Academic All-Conference and Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete, she also set an ERAU single-season record for wins with 19.

"I am so excited for 'Lynchy' to be recognized by other coaches," Bohon said. "She works incredibly hard and was pretty raw when she arrived two years ago. I thought she improved a lot this season with both technique and decision-making. Her athleticism is one of her greatest strengths."

Johansson (Karlstad, Sweden) is another freshman who earned a spot in the Eagles' starting 11. A first team All-Conference honoree, she totaled 15 points on five goals and five assists and netted two game-winners on the year, including the go-ahead goal against Northwood in The Sun Conference regular season championship on Nov. 5.

"Emmie offered us great versatility as either a target forward or a holding midfielder," Bohon observed. "She sees the game at an extremely high level and can hurt teams with her precise passing. She's also very tough in a game and added some needed physicality in our midfield."

Rolfsen is also a freshman on the Eagle roster who worked her way into the lineup as Hansson's partner in the center of the Eagles' back line. She started in 19 games and scored her only goal of the season against Ave Maria on Oct. 2.

"I can count on one hand how many times I've seen Hanna get beaten in the run of play," Bohon commented. "She is an exceptional individual defender - one of the best here and we've had some good ones. She's extremely powerful and composed on the ball. She makes tough plays look really easy. Our team was able to push more offensively because Hanna and Helena were securing up the back line."

Sophomore Isabelle Haaranen garnered honorable mention recognition. The second Eagle forward on the All-Sun Conference first team, Haaranen was second behind Froshaug on the Eagles' scoring charts. The Arsunda, Sweden native finished the season with 12 goals and five assists (31 points) and led the squad in game-winning goals with four. She was also named to the Academic All-Conference team.

"Isabelle is probably the most underrated player on our team," Bohon observed. "Much of her work goes unnoticed by the untrained eye, but our team and staff know how essential she is to our team. Several goals she scored this year simply came because she wouldn't stop running through tackles. She improved a tremendous amount from last year to become more of a goal-scorer. And her attitude every day in practice sets the tone for the rest of the group."

The three All-America teams were selected by the NAIA All-America Committee, which consists of the NAIA-Women's Soccer Coaches Association officers and seven additional women's soccer coaches.
