MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the season, falling to NCAA II No. 3 Barry on the road on Sunday. The Eagles are now 1-1 on the year, while the Buccaneers improve to 2-0.
The Buccaneers took a 3-0 lead with a sweep in doubles play. Barry's Linda Fritschken and Emma Onila, ranked No.1 in NCAA II, topped Embry-Riddle's NAIA top-ranked pair of Hui-Huang and
Kristina Marova at the top spot. Karina Goia and Anaeve Pain downed
Eva Vilar and Paula Couder 8-3 at No. 3 and Elisabeth Abanda and Isabela Miro bested Anna Götz and
Paola Montero 8-4 at the second position to complete the sweep.
The match-up at No. 1 singles pitted Abanda against Huang, two players ranked ninth in their respective divisions. Abanda got the better of the match-up, topping Huang 6-1, 6-4. The Bucs won all the matches on courts 2-5 in straight sets, including Kimmy Twelker's clinching victory against Ana Götz at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3).
The Eagles got their only point of the contest at the sixth singles position where Couder got the better of the match-up against Jasi Witherspoon, downing the Buccaneer freshman 6-1, 6-3.
The Eagles return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they host NCAA II No. Rollins at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
