DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite outhitting the defending Florida State League champions, 8-5, the NAIA No. 15 Embry-Riddle Eagles fell 7-0 to the Daytona Cubs in the teams' annual exhibition contest at Historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Wednesday evening. The seven-inning game featured plenty of highlights for the Blue and Gold as they gear up for the final month of the 2014 regular season.
The Eagles nearly took a lead in the top of the first after
Liam Goodall tripled to right center off of pitching prospect Yao-Lin Wang, reaching third with one out for
Kevin Lindheim, but Wang retired both Lindheim and the next batter,
Darryl Knight, to keep the game scoreless.
David Lidyard worked a perfect bottom of the first, including a shallow fly ball off of 2012 first round pick, Albert Almora, sending ERAU back to the plate where
Hunter Bruehl and
Colt Hankamer each recorded two-out singles, but again, Wang was able to get out of the inning with a ground ball.
A 2013 14th-round pick of the Cubs,
Daniel Poncedeleon, tossed the second frame for the Eagles, not allowing a hit, but the Cubs managed to score an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead.
Jordan Johnson made a nice defensive play for the second out of the inning, moving to his left and throwing across his body for a 4-3 groundout.
Almora managed to break up the Eagles' staff no-hitter with a double to left center after a second Cub run scored in the third inning, and Daytona was able to load the bases against
Tyler Cyr before
Ronnie Lozada entered and escaped the jam with a fly ball to left.
The Eagles went quietly offensively until a
Jordan Johnson base hit in the fourth, and
Kyle Chastain showed some wheels in the fifth after a hit, swiping second to put himself in scoring position.
Brian Johnson struck out the side in the last of the fifth, working around a bases-loaded situation before Knight collected a line drive base hit through the left side of the infield in the sixth, but the Eagles' couldn't do anything with it.
The Cubs added four runs in the home half of the sixth inning to go up 7-0, but ERAU had their best scoring chance in the seventh after
Jake Cavender singled and
Matt Jacobs doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third with one out. However, the Single-A Advanced farm team of the Chicago Cubs closed out the contest without the Eagles scratching across a run.
Embry-Riddle returns to Sliwa Stadium for a weekend Sun Conference matchup against Florida Memorial, beginning with a Friday night game at 6 p.m. and a Saturday twin bill at 1 p.m.
