DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the seventh year in row, the title match of the Sun Conference men's tennis tournament will feature a team from Embry-Riddle. The top-seeded Eagles earned the right to play for the tournament championship with a 5-0 defeat of fifth-seeded St. Thomas at the Crotty Tennis Complex on Friday.
It took the Eagles just 45 minutes to sweep all three doubles matches.
Rodolfo Arreygue and
Miguel Lopez Gomez struck first for the Blue and Gold with their 8-1 win over Luis Soto and Juan Villamizar at the third flight. Fabian Zierlyn and
Carlos Becke followed with an 8-2 defeat of Matias Dasso and Josh Rosner on court two, and at the top spot,
Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios and
Deni Zmak made it 3-0 with their 8-4 decision against Juan Bravo and Grover Ordonez.
The Eagles won the first set on all six singles courts, but it was Becke and Lopez Gomez who assured the Eagles of the victory as Becke topped Soto 6-0, 6-1 and Lopez Gomez handled Dasso 6-1, 6-0.
The Eagles' opponent in the championship match will be No. 2 seed Northwood who downed SCAD Savannah 5-2 to advance. The contest will get underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
