Men’s Tennis Conference Tournament Crown Returns to Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The second-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team wrapped up its final season as a member of The Sun Conference by successfully defending its conference tournament title with a 5-0 defeat of Northwood (11-3), Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles, who are now 18-3 overall, celebrated their seventh consecutive league tournament championship, making them the only team to win the tournament since its inception in 2009.

Doubles play saw Fabian Zierlyn and Carlos Becke give the Eagles a 1-0 lead with their 8-3 win over David Uquillas and Martin Martins at the second position.

The match on court one featured Northwood's top-ranked tandem of Rafael Lenz and Alvaro Iturriaga and ERAU's fourth-ranked team of Deni Zmak and Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios. In the last match between the two teams, Lenz and Iturriaga got an 8-1 win, but Saturday's contest saw Zmak and Sanchez-Canamares avenge that loss, downing the Northwood pair 8-4 to put the Eagles up 2-0.

At the third spot, Rodolfo Arreygue and Miguel Lopez Gomez made it a doubles sweep with their 8-2 decision against Nicolas Guershanik and Ignacio Osse.

All six singles matches were close at the start, but the Eagles got the two victories they needed from Lopez Gomez and Becke. Lopez Gomez was the first to get a singles point as he defeated Guershanik 6-2, 6-0 at the sixth spot, and Becke scored the clincher with his 6-2, 6-1 win over Lenz at No. 3.

By virtue of their conference tournament championship, the Eagles receive an automatic bid to the 2015 NAIA National Championship, which takes place May 12-16 at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. National tournament pairings and match times will be announced at a later date.
