NAIA No. 2 Embry-Riddle Bests NCAA II No. 37 Florida Tech, 8-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NAIA No. 2 Embry-Riddle men's tennis team earned its fifth consecutive win via a 8-1 defeat of NCAA II No. 37 Florida Tech on Thursday. The Eagles are now 13-3 on the year, while the Panthers moved to 12-7 with the loss.
 
Second-ranked Deni Zmak and Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios easily won their top flight doubles match against Beau Fieldsend and Mattias Hartmann, 8-1, to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The next match off the court was at No. 2 doubles where Carlos Becke and Fabian Zierlyn downed Aria Candell and Ricardo Corona 8-4 to put the Eagles up 2-0.
 
At the third doubles spot, Miguel Lopez Gomez and Rodolfo Arreygue trailed 2-1 early, but rallied to take the match 8-4, completing the doubles sweep for the Eagles.
 
In singles, Sanchez-Canamares picked up the Eagles' fourth point by dispatching Hartmann 6-3, 6-1 on court two. For the third time this season, Arreygue recorded the clinching point as he left court six with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Martinez.
 
Becke and Zmak also notched straight-set wins at the fourth and first positions, respectively as Becke downed Ball 6-1, 6-3 and Zmak bested Fieldsend 6-2, 6-1. Zierlyn earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Candell at No. 2.
 
The longest singles match of the day lasted two and a half hours and was played between de Caires and Corona at the No. 5 spot. De Caires took the first set 6-4, but Corona was able to bounce back and help the Panthers escape the shutout by winning 6-3, 10-4 in the next two sets.
 
The Blue and Gold will return to Sun Conference play at 2 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Georgia to take on SCAD Savannah.
