DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The second-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team closed out its final season in the Sun Conference as the league's regular season champion courtesy of a 7-2 defeat of No. 13 Northwood, Wednesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The regular season title was the Eagles' 13th overall and the 11th in Dave Paschal's 11 seasons as the Eagles' head coach, and extended their conference unbeaten streak to an unprecedented 74-0, a record that dates back to 2003.
In a battle between the only two unbeaten teams in conference play, the Eagles won two doubles and five singles points to improve to 15-3 overall and 7-0 in the league.
In doubles play, Northwood struck first as Alvaro Itiurraga and Rafael Lenz stunned second-ranked
Deni Zmak and
Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios, 8-1. The Eagles got on the board when
Miguel Lopez Gomez and
Rodolfo Arreygue teamed up for an 8-6 defeat of Ignacio Osse and Julian Sarrion at the third spot, and Fabian Zierlyn and
Carlos Becke put the Eagles out in front with their 8-4 win over David Uquillas and Martin Martins at No. 2.
At No. 4 singles Becke extended the Eagle advantage to 3-1 when he took down Martins 6-2, 6-1. The match at the top singles spot featured top-ranked Zmak against No. 22 Itiurraga and the ERAU junior was able to exact a measure of revenge for the doubles loss as he dispatched Itiurraga 6-0, 6-2 to increase the lead to 4-1.
The match at the second position saw Sanchez-Canamares earn a 6-4, 6-2 win over Uquillas to assure the Eagles of a victory.
Lenz recorded the only singles point for the Seahawks (10-2, 6-1) when he held off Zierlyn 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at the fourth spot.
The matches at the fifth and sixth positions saw
Luke de Caires and Arreygue notch 6-2 first-set victories against Osse and Guillerme Cuhna, respectively. Both Northwood players took 3-0 leads in the second set, but both de Caires and Arreygue were able to rally to win 7-5 on each court.
The Eagles will close out their regular season slate at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday when they host NCAA II No. 12 Rollins at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
