NAIA No. 2 ERAU Deals NCAA II No. 12 Rollins 8-1 Loss

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The second-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team wrapped up regular season play with a 16-3 overall record after besting NCAA II No. 12 Rollins 8-1 in the Eagles' regular season finale on Thursday. The Tars fell to 10-7 with the loss.
 
At the top doubles spot, Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios and Deni Zmak bounced back from a loss on Wednesday to dominate the Rollins duo of Adrian DeFelice and Jacobo Herrero 8-2. On court two, Antonio Bettink and Malte Christesen evened the team score with an 8-5 win over Fabian Zierlyn and Carlos Becke.
 
The match at No. 3 doubles took lasted close to 90 minutes and saw ERAU's Miguel Lopez Gomez and Rodolfo Arreygue take a 5-2 lead. The Eagle duo went up 7-4, but the Tars' Robin Marchione and Patrick Sell won the next two games to make the score 7-6. Rollins had a chance to tie the match with their service game, but Lopez Gomez and Arreygue got a break for the win to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
 
Sanchez-Canamares made quick work of Christesen, beating the Tars' No. 2 player 6-1, 6-0 to increase the ERAU lead to 3-1. Playing next to Sanchez-Canamares at the No. 4 spot, Becke earned the Eagles' fourth point with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Marchione.
 
For the second time in three matches, Arreygue wrapped up the clinching point as his 6-4, 6-1 win over Di Felice at the sixth position assured the Eagles of the win.
 
Down 5-2 in the first Luke de Caires rallied for a tie-break 7-6 (2) win and rolled to a 6-2 victory in the second set to down Herrero on court five.
 
At No. 1 singles, top-ranked Zmak faced NCAA II No. 6 Bettink for the second time this season, having bested the Rollins sophomore in three sets in fall play. Bettink took the first set 6-4, but Zmak battled to a 7-5 win in the second to force a super tiebreaker. The final frame belonged to Zmak who pulled out his second three-set victory against Bettink, 10-2.
 
In the last match off the court, Zierlyn earned a straight set (6-2, 7-5) win against Sell at the third spot to cap the Eagles' scoring.
 
By virtue of their undefeated run in Sun Conference play, the Eagles will be the No. 1 seed in the six-team conference tournament, which takes place at ERAU's Crotty Tennis Complex April 16-18. Tournament times and pairings are yet to be determined.
