DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team scored twice in the second half, but that wasn't enough overcome a two-goal deficit to Nova Southeastern in the Eagles' home opener at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium on Wednesday. The 22nd-ranked Eagles fell to the Sharks 3-2 in Sunshine State Conference play, moving to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Sharks (RV) improve to 5-0 and 1-0 in the SSC.
"First, congrats to Nova for getting the win," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "I thought the game was a tale of two halves. We did some good things and had a lot of success in the first half, but couldn't connect those final passes in the box. The second half saw us go completely away from what worked earlier. It was so frustrating. Nova did nothing differently than what we told them at halftime would happen, and yet we still didn't play our game. I liked to see that our team kept working hard and pulled even and gave us a chance at the end, but we need to be more disciplined."
Both of the Eagles' goals came from the boot of reigning SSC Offensive Player of the Week
Ragnheidur Gardarsdottir who led the Blue and Gold with six shots, including four on frame.
The first half saw ERAU enjoy much of the possession, but despite some promising build-up play, they were unable to find the finishing touch that would result in a score.
Embry-Riddle and Nova Southeastern combined for just five shots in the first 45 minutes, but with the exception of a NSU shot that was cleared off the line in the 31st minute, neither squad mounted a serious threat on goal, resulting in a scoreless tie at the half.
Both sides came out firing to start the second half, almost doubling the first half shot total in the first 20 minutes of the second frame.
The Sharks struck first, capitalizing on the second of back-to-back corner kicks to take a 1-0 lead as Laura Pederson finished Monica Orteu's cross in the 66th minute.
With 16:01 left in the game the Eagles pulled level when
Emmie Johansson's ball from the middle of the pitch floated over the top of the NSU defense to
Ragnheidur Gardarsdottir on the run. Gardarsdottir headed it forward to beat her defender and slotted a shot into the lower left corner to knot the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied for only a short while as Alexys Nowak put the Sharks back in front with an unassisted strike less than a minute later and with just under 10 minutes remaining, she assisted on Myriah Troutman's goal to extend the NSU lead to 3-1.
Gardarsdottir struck again for the Blue and Gold with 3:19 left in the contest. The play started on the left side where
Julia Olsson dropped a pass back to
Elizabeth Allen outside the left corner of the 18-yard box. Allen lofted a ball into the box that Gardarsdottir flicked into the lower right corner to bring the Eagles within one, but that was as close as they would get as time expired before they could find the tying goal.
The Eagles go back on the road on Saturday, traveling to Boca Raton to take on Lynn. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
