DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - Everything has been just a little out of the ordinary since last March, and Saturday was no different as the Embry-Riddle women's cross country team opened their abbreviated 2020-21 season in a home dual against Florida Tech; but despite the masks, social distancing, and lack of spectators, the Eagles were still able to compete for the first time since November of 2019, performing well in their first action of the season.
Anna Miller and
Alyssa Zack led the way for the eight Eagle runners, finishing within one second of each other with Miller narrowly edging Zack with a time of 20:52, claiming the first meet title of her career. Zack (20:52.9) finished ahead of
Ukeyvia Beckwith (21:01) in third, while
Maggie Allen (22:11) and
Grayson Iller (22:30) rounded out the Eagles' top five.
Making their collegiete debuts was a trio of freshman Eagles, led by
Nithya Chummar (23:11) in sixth.
Ravyn Edge (23:26) and
Abby Valley (23:50) went seventh and eighth, respectively as the entire Eagle team finished in front of Florida Tech's pair of runners in ninth and 10th.
"It felt really good to finally get out and run," Head Coach
Mike Rosolino said. "We're missing a couple of women for various reasons, but to finally get to compete for the first time in what has felt like forever was really nice."
The Eagles will travel to Lakeland on Feb. 13 for the Sunshine State Conference Pre-Conference Meet at Holloway Park.
