Eagle Volleyball Wins Two at Crusader Classic, Extends Win Streak to 11

LIVONIA, Mich. – The seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle volleyball team picked up two more wins on Saturday, sweeping Siena Heights and rallying from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Daemen 3-2 on the second and final day of the BLT Sportswear Crusader Classic hosted by Madonna University. The Eagles dispatched of SHU in three sets (25-13, 25-22, 25-17) in the morning and took care of DC 3-2 (20-25, 15-15, 25-21, 25-23, 15-6) to close out the tournament.
 
With the wins, ERAU improves to 21-4 on the year and extended its winning streak to 11 matches. Siena Heights falls to 14-8 and Daemen drops to 17-8.
 
ERAU 3, SHU 0
 
The Blue and Gold dominated nearly the entire match against Siena Heights, accumulating a .402 hitting percentage, the second-highest in a single match for the Eagles this season. Embry-Riddle committed just one hitting error in the first set as they outhit the Saints, .448 to .026. A 5-0 run that included four SHU errors gave the Eagles a 9-4 lead early in the set, and ERAU closed the set on a 7-2 run to win the frame, 25-13.
 
In the second set, Embry-Riddle held a commanding 22-16 advantage until Siena Heights went on a 6-1 run to close the gap to just one point (23-22). The Eagles regrouped and got kills from Gloria Kemp and Morgan Shattuck on the next two points, earning a 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
SHU held a 7-5 lead early in the third set before Embry-Riddle strung together a 6-1 spurt to gain an 11-8 advantage. The Blue and Gold maintained the lead throughout the set and eventually finished off the Saints by scoring the final four points of the match, the last three of which came on Jordan Holcomb kills. The Eagles won the third set, 25-17, sweeping the match, 3-0.
 
Holcomb led the way for Embry-Riddle with 14 kills and hit .433 while also collecting seven digs. Taylor Martin added 10 kills, eight digs and four blocks (two solo). Shattuck contributed seven kills on only nine swings, good for a match-high .778 hitting percentage, and blocked five balls (one solo). Kemp (.417) and Emily Jacobson (.429) each chipped in with six kills and plus-.400 hitting percentages. Hannah Gray picked up a team-best 14 digs while Adriana Vazquez totaled a match-high 39 assists.
 
Lindsey Adams recorded 15 kills for SHU, leading all players. Halie Baker added 14 kills and seven digs. Carly Tillotson racked up a match-high 16 digs and a team-high 33 assists.
 
ERAU 3, DC 2
 
In the afternoon match, Daemen got the early jump on the Eagles, running out to a 12-4 lead. A 4-0 run by Taylor Martin (2 kills, 2 aces) brought ERAU to within four points (13-9), but DC once again extended the lead to 21-12. After an 8-2 Eagle run cut the deficit to 23-20, Daemen scored a pair of points to win the set, 25-20.
 
Embry-Riddle got off to a better start in set two, taking a 6-2 lead early on. The Wildcats found their rhythm, rattling off an 8-1 streak that featured four kills from Jenn Karan to take a 14-10 lead. ERAU couldn't cut into the lead and Daemen eventually finished the set on another 8-1 run, winning the frame, 25-15, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Set three saw the Eagles take an 8-4 lead early and maintain a lead throughout most of the set. DC slowly chipped away at the deficit, eventually drawing even at 21-21. But a service error gave the Eagles the lead once again, and a block from Morgan Shattuck followed by a kill from Taylor Martin put ERAU one point away from the set. An attack error by Joanna Fretthold closed out the set at 25-21 in favor of Embry-Riddle, extending the match to a fourth set.
 
The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair, featuring 21 ties and 14 lead changes. The final lead change came after Erika Hinel and Jordan Holcomb put down back-to-back kills, moving Embry-Riddle in front, 23-22. After DC scored to tie the set, Holcomb scored another kill and Shattuck ended the set with a solo block, giving the Eagles a 25-23 win and tying the match 2-2.
 
In the decisive fifth set, Embry-Riddle looked the better side throughout, running out to a 5-2 lead early and leading the rest of the way. Daemen closed to within a point (5-4) only to see the Blue and Gold end the match on an 11-2 run, including the final five points. ERAU won the set convincingly, 15-6, taking the match, 3-2.
 
Holcomb led the Eagles with 20 kills and added 12 digs while Martin totaled 18 kills, eight digs and four service aces. Emily Jacobson chipped in nine kills while Shattuck and Hinel each contributed seven kills. Veera Hietala picked up a team-high 15 digs and Adriana Vazquez tallied a match-high 52 assists to go along with 11 digs.
 
Fretthold registered a match-high 21 kills and 20 digs for the Wildcats. Kaley Vazquez (30 assists, 19 digs) and Chelsea Turcer (31 assists, 10 digs) ran the offense for Daemen, while Paige Tilert collected 15 digs.
 
The Eagles will wrap up the road trip with a conference match at Southeastern on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
