THE EAGLESTonight marks the final regular season home game for the second-ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team. The Eagles improved to 11-1 on the year with wins against conference foes SCAD Savannah and South Carolina Beaufort last weekend. With a 5-0 record in league play, the Eagles currently sit atop The Sun Conference's North Division standings. Â
Action on Friday saw the ERAU women fall behind by two goals in the first 16 minutes of the game, but they battled back, scoring three times in the first half and twice in the second to top SCAD 5-3. Two days later, the Blue and Gold scored three late goals to top South Carolina Beaufort 3-0.
Andrea Frøshaug continues to lead the Eagle offense as her two goals and two assists has her at 28 points on 12 goals and four assists.
Isabelle Haaranen is second with 20 points on eight goals and four assists and leads the squad in game-winners (3), while
Katherine Ebbs, Julia Karlernäs and
Dana Robins have five assists apiece.
The Eagles have gotten significant contributions from the seven newcomers this season, accounting for 24 goals and 20 assists so far this season. The newcomers are led by
Annie Gelnaw (6 goals, 4 assists), Julia Karlernäs' (5 goals, 5 assists) and
Nina Joergensen (5 goals, 2 assists).
THE BLUE RAIDERSLed by 12th-year head coach Drew Burwash, the sixth-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team comes into Wednesday's contest with a 7-2-2 overall record. Under his guidance, the Blue Raiders have won three NAIA national titles, made 12 national championship appearances, including a semifinal finish in 2013, and have won the MidSouth Conference regular season title 11 times.
Amanda Kander is leading this year's LWC offense with 19 points on eight goals and three assists. Lyana Perez and Bettina Brulhart have chipped in six and five goals, respectively, while Elizabeth Madjarac has a team-high five assists. Johanna Henriksson has played in 11 games and is second in the NAIA with a .36 goals against average.
THE SERIESThe Eagles and the Blue Raiders have squared off five times. The last contest between the two teams came in the on Sept. 8 when the Eagles topped the then-No. 1 Lindsey Wilson 1-0 on a goal by
Martine Olsen. Lindsey Wilson leads the all-time series 4-1.
THE LAST TIME THEY METOn Sept. 8, 2013, the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team notched its second win against a top-ranked opponent with a 1-0 decision against Lindsey Wilson on neutral ground at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, home of the 2013 and 2014 NAIA National Championships
The start of the game saw both teams even in possession. The Blue Raiders had a 3-1 shot advantage on the stat sheet, but the Eagles created an equal number of chances as crosses behind the LWC defense just missed their intended targets.
At the 27:05 mark
Valerie Obita forced a Lindsey Wilson defender to play the ball out over the goal line resulting in an ERAU corner kick.
Katherine Ebbs started the set piece from the left corner flag and lifted the ball in toward the near post where it was met by Obita. Obita headed the ball into the path of
Martine Olsen who stood on the goal line near the far post and the senior headed the ball into the back of the net to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The remainder of the half saw Lindsey Wilson increase its intensity on offense, but the Eagles, thanks in part to a couple of strong plays from goalkeeper
Olivia Lynch, turned back the Blue Raider attack and took the one-goal advantage into the intermission.
In the 49th minute, the Eagles won another corner kick and seemed destined to repeat the success of the first half, but this time Olsen's shot was stopped on the line by a LWC defender.
Later in the half,
Rebekka Gisladottir won the ball in the Eagles' defensive third and made a pass that released
Isabelle Haaranen on the left side. Haaranen dribbled another 10 yards before taking aim at the goal, but LWC goalkeeper Johanna Henrikson got her fingertips to the ball to keep the Eagles off the board again.
With just under eight minutes remaining, the Eagles launched an attack that led to a series of four consecutive corner kicks. The Blue Raiders managed to turn back each set piece and with a minute left, took the ball to the other end of the pitch. LWC got the ball into the box and a ERAU clearance attempt ricocheted off LWC forward Natasha Gensetter and back toward the goal, but once again, Lynch was on hand to snag the save and preserve the shutout.
