DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team improved its overall record to 6-2 on the year by edging NCAA I Eastern Kentucky (6-5) 4-3 on Monday. In a match be played according to NCAA I rules, the Eagles trailed the Colonels 1-0 early after dropping two of three doubles, but bounced back to claim four singles matches to secure the win.
 
At No. 2 doubles, Ramon Van Flymen and Diogo Soares topped Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios and Carlos Becke 6-2. Next door, on court one, Deni Zmak and Fabian Zierlyn earned a 7-5 win over Sebas Meuller and Juanjo de la Llera, leaving it to the match at the third spot to decide the doubles point.
 
The third-flight doubles match between ERAU's Rodolfo Arreygue and Luke de Caires and EKU's Alex Alvaro and Diego Asis required a tiebreaker to determine the outcome. In the end it was Alvaro and Asis who got the 7-6 (7-5) win to grab the doubles point for the Colonels.
 
Playing at the third singles spot, Becke made quick work of Soares, handing the EKU sophomore a 6-0, 6-1 defeat.
 
Sanchez-Canamares put the Eagles ahead with his 6-4, 6-1 win over van Flymen at No. 2 singles and Zmak widened the ERAU gap to 3-1 with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Alvaro at the top spot.
 
The Colonels got a point back when Mueller held off Zierlyn 6-3, 7-5 on court four to make it 3-2.
 
With two matches remaining, the Eagles got the clinching point they needed from Arreygue as the freshman downed Florian Graskamp 6-3, 6-3 at the sixth spot to secure the win.
 
The Eagles have two days off before returning to action at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday to host St. Francis (Ill.) at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
