DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 24th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched its second win over a ranked opponent this season, besting NCAA II No. 4 West Florida 5-4, Wednesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Luke de Caires and
Mickael Faucher 8-1 at three doubles. At the second spot,
Fabian Zierleyn and
Carlos Becke evened the score with their 8-3 defeat of Juan Pablo Boada and Pedro Roese, and
Deni Zmak and
Juan Ortiz Couder put the Eagles in front with an 8-5 victory over the fifth-ranked tandem of Alex Peyrot and Kenny Brasil at the top spot.
The team score was tied again when 22
nd-ranked Brasil topped Becke 6-2, 6-2 at the third position. Ortiz Couder got the point back by downing Borrero 6-2, 6-3 at the fifth spot, but Boe tied things up again at 3-3 when he held off de Caires 6-2, 7-5.
The last three matches were all three-set battles. The first to finish was Zmak who faced Boada at the top spot. After taking the first set 6-2, Zmak stumbled in the second 6-3, but the ERAU senior regained his momentum and dispatched Boada 6-2 in the third to put the Eagles up 4-3.
On court four, Arreygue got off to a slow start, dropping the first set 6-0. The sophomore was behind 5-4 in the second but staved off double match point and rallied to win the frame 7-5 and force a decisive third set. Arreygue took full advantage of the momentum swing in the third and soared past Sanchez to clinch the match, 6-2.
In the final match off the court, Zierleyn rebounded from a 6-4 loss in the first set to take the second 7-5, but in the end 22
nd-ranked Peyrot managed to come away with a 6-2 win in the final set.
