SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team led early, but the Eagles unable to sustain the advantage, falling to No. 29 St. Leo 6-3 on the Lions' home courts on Saturday. The loss puts the Eagles at 2-8, while the Lions evened their record at 5-5.
The Lions scored the first point of the day when Katherine Zaatini and Fabiola Cardenas bested
Georgina Wood and
Lydia Carter 8-0 at the third spot. ERAU managed to overtake the home team as
Maud Mrad and
Alexis Marshall topped Marine Beugre-Guyot and Kristyna Jurkova 8-6 at the top spot, and
Maria Turrillo and
Kathryn Bock earned an 8-6 win over Maja Pindelska and Madeleine Gauthier on court two to give the Blue and Gold a 2-1 edge heading into singles.
St. Leo was dominant in singles play, taking five of the six singles matches. Jurkova was the first off the court as she managed to get the better of Turrillo, 6-4, 6-4 at the third spot. Beugre-Guyot followed with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Mrad at the top spot, and Pindelska held off Wood 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 2.
The clinching point came on court four where Cardenas emerged on the winning end of another three-set battle, downing Marshall 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Eagles will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday when they host Florida Tech at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
