DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team came out on the winning end of a 5-4 battle on Tuesday as the Eagles topped Lewis (Illinois) at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win improved the Eagles' record to 2-6, while the Flyers moved to 5-3.
The third-ranked Lewis pair of Dora Andrejski and Nora Mindiyarova earned the first point of the day with an 8-3 win over
Maud Mrad and
Alexis Marshall on court one.
Teaming up for the first time this season, ERAU's
Ana Gonzalez-Hoy and
Lydia Carter fell behind Megan Conlin and Hailey Bruining 5-2 on court three. Gonzalez and Carter won three of the next four games to close the gap to 6-5, and bested the Lewis pair 3-0 in the final three games to win 8-6 and tie the team score at 1-1.
The final doubles match saw the Eagles'
Kathryn Bock and
Maria Turrillo go down by a break, but like their teammates at the third spot, they mounted a successful rally, topping Oana Trus and Sara Grozdanovic 8-4 to give the Blue and Gold a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.
The first singles point of the day went to the Marshall who bested Trus 6-2, 6-0 at the fourth spot. After the Flyers grabbed their first singles point with a win at the fourth spot, Bock made the team score 4-2 with her 6-2, 6-0 win over Conlin on court four.
The next two points went to Lewis as the Flyers notched wins at the top two spots to tie the score. The deciding match was at No. 6 between Gonzalez-Hoy and Bruining and the Embry-Riddle senior was up to the challenge as she dispatched Bruining 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the Eagle victory.
ERAU returns to the courts on Wednesday when they travel to Winter Park to face Rollins at 3:30 p.m.
